Every year on july 26 th, Kargil Vijay Diwas is commemorated in India, to observe India’s victory over Pakistan in the kargil war to expel Pakistani Forces from their occupied positions on the mountain tops of Northern Kargil District in Ladakh in 1999.The Pakistani army denied their involvement in the war initially, claiming that it was caused by Kashmiri militants. However the statements by the Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Army Chief Pervez Mushrraf and documents left behind by casualties showed the involvement of Pakistani paramilitary forces.
Brief history of kargil war
Kargil war occured in the Kargil District of Jammu and Kashmir, beside the Line of Control (LoC). Pakistan’s army sent its soldiers to take over the area in the name of intruders . Pakistan army’s main objective was to cut the connections between Ladakh and Kashmir to create tensions at the Indian border. Here, the intruders at that time were on the top, but the Indians were on the downhill slope. so it was easy for them to attack the Indian army . Finally, the war broke out. Pakistani intruders crossed the Line of Control and entered the area where India-controlled.
Pakistan started war when it had infiltrated into the high altitudes in the rocky mountainous region of Kargil On 3rd May 1999 with around 5000 soldiers and captured it. ‘Operation Vijay’ was launched by the Indian army, When the Government got the information about it to throw back the intruders.
scenario before the Kargil War; During the winter In 1998-1999 , in order to dominate the Kargil region with the goal of claiming Siachen Glacier , the Pakistani Army secretly trained and sent troops to dominate the Kargil region with the goal of claiming Siachen Glacier. Further, the Pakistan Army exclaimed that they were the Mujahideen not the Pakistani soldiers. Actually, they wanted international attention on the dispute. So the Indian army could be forced to withdraw its army from the Siachen Glacier region and also force India to negotiate for the Kashmir dispute.
The story behind the war: There have been many military conflicts after the Indo-Pak war of 1971. In 1998 Both the countries conducted nuclear tests, which had further escalated tensions. To calm the situation, the two countries signed The Lahore Declaration in February 1999. In which both countries promised to provide a peaceful and bilateral solution to the Kashmir conflict.
But what really happened was that; Pakistani Armed Forces started an infiltration code-named “Operation Badr”.They sent its soldiers and paramilitary forces across the Line of Control into the territory on the Indian side. Kargil war had been the war between two nuclear states.
MiG-2Is, MiG-23s, MiG-27s, Jaguars, and the Mirage-2000 were the planes used by the Indian Army Force for ground attack. . In the war various targets of Pakistan were attacked. Thus, IAF’s MiG-21s and Mirage 2000 were extensively used in Operation Safed Sagar during this war.
Several rockets and bombs were used in the kargilwar..we can say this was the only war after World War II in which such a large number of bomb and nuclear weapons were carried out on the enemy army. Finally, India won the war with a determined victory.the war ended on 26 th july 1999.
