Vedic Maths or Vedic Mathematics is a collection of Methods or Sutras to solve numerical computations quickly and faster. It consists of 16 Sutras called Formulae and 13 sub-sutras called Sub Formulae, which can be applied to solve problems in calculus, geometry, conics, arithmetic, algebra, etc. All the sutras and sub sutras of Vedic maths help us to perform mathematical operations quickly and accurately.Vedic Mathematics is a gift given to this world by the ancient sagas of India.

Vedic maths was rediscovered from the ancient Indian scriptures between 1911 and 1918 by Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji (1884-1960), a scholar of Sanskrit, Mathematics, History and Philosophy. He studied these ancient texts for years, and after careful investigation was able to reconstruct a series of mathematical formulae called sutras that can be applied even in the modern system of mathematics to ease up any complicated problems.

A book entitled ‘Introductory Lectures on Vedic Mathematics’ by A. P. Nicholas, John Pickles, and Kenneth R. Williams was published in 1981.

A few successive trips to India by Andrew Nicholas between 1981 and 1987, renewed the interest on vedic math, and scholars and teachers in India started taking it seriously.

Ekadhikina Purvena, Nikhilam Navatashcaramam Dashatah, Urdhva-Tiryagbyham, Paraavartya Yojayet, Shunyam Saamyasamuccaye, (Anurupye) Shunyamanyat, Sankalana-vyavakalanabhyam, Puranapuranabyham, Chalana-Kalanabyham, Yaavadunam, Vyashtisamanstih, Shesanyankena Charamena, Sopaantyadvayamantyam, Ekanyunena Purvena, Gunitasamuchyah, Gunakasamuchyah.

Features of vedic mathematics

  • Avoid complexity : The most attractive feature of vedic maths is solving problems using one single and simple step.
  • Accuracy and less time consuming : Mental calculation is the main strategy followed by Vedic Maths; we can save our time as we are solvings problems by using simple methods and with fewer steps. Since the steps are less, the probability  of accuracy is more.
  • Improve Memory and Concentration: Since all the calculations are done mentally, and with very few steps, students become very strong in their basics, which improves their memory and concentration.  Research shows that the application of Vedic mathematics makes use of both parts of the brain.
  • Increase Intuitive abilities: As Vedic Maths gives faster and accurate results; this quality encourages the student to be more confident and to be more competent, increasing his/her intuition abilities.
  • Vedic math improves the spiritual side of our personality.

Disadvantages

vedic
  • No general rule: There is no general rule in Vedic Mathematics for all types of problems. Rules for Vedic maths are meant for some particular problems only.
  • Too Many rules: For any operation like multiplication you will find too many rules which are applied for different types of problems. This creates confusion.
  • Need More mental calculations
  • Not easy to cross check
  • It is very difficult to remember the Rules / Algorithms in Vedic Mathematics for solving problems.

Vedic Mathematics is the source of actual Mathematics that we are studying now in schools and colleges. Most of the text of Vedic Maths is available in Sanskrit and other old literature. It requires more resources, research and time to come into the mainstream subject. Monotonous and dry teaching methods in schools are the primary reason for disinterest in Math. By studying Vedic maths we can make learning more fun. It definitely improves the calculation power of an individual. Students who learn Vedic Mathematics have been said to perform better in competitive exams. Vedic Mathematics is a beautiful practice that keeps the brain alert and helps in the overall development of an individual.
